Hayden Flat Group Campground sits at roughly 1,200 feet on the north side of California Highway 299, about 31 miles west of Weaverville in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The upper loop has been converted into three group campsites each configured to accommodate both tents and RVs and those group sites are located behind a locked gate at the top of the campground. Sites are designed for groups rather than individual dispersed spots, so expect larger, shared clearings rather than private drive-up pads; the Forest Service lists the campground as three group sites that permit both RV and tent camping. There are no details here about on-site hookups or showers, so plan to be mostly self-contained and check with the Weaverville Ranger Station or the Shasta-Trinity NF website for current access rules, fees, reservation requirements and seasonal openings before you go. The campground sits directly on the Wild and Scenic reach of the Trinity River, giving straightforward access to fishing, swimming, floating, rafting, kayaking and small-boat use river access at Hayden Flat is intended for craft that can be carried by hand rather than launched from a large ramp. Nearby tributaries also provide calmer swimming holes for hot afternoons. Be aware that sections of the river vary in difficulty: Pigeon Point to Big Flat is considered too hazardous for tubers and family canoeists, and the stretch from Cedar Flat to Grays Falls should be attempted only by expert boaters. Flows on the Trinity are influenced by releases from Lewiston Dam; for current cubic-feet-per-second information call (530) 246-7594. Several commercially guided outfitters operate on the river under Forest Service permits (linkable listings are on the Shasta-Trinity NF site), and trailheads into the Trinity Alps Wilderness are nearby contact the Weaverville Ranger Station for wilderness information and any required self-issue permits for overnight trips.
