What guests say

Verbatim from guest reviews on Recreation.gov ↗ (11 reviews, ★ 5.0). Not written or edited by us.

“We loved our experience at this group campground. Plenty of room for tents and a nice large cooking eating area with 12 tables and 3 BBQ grills. We will likely come back again!”

About

Playground Group Campground sits near the summit of Mingus Mountain at about 7,500 feet in Prescott National Forest, offering wide views down to the surrounding desert valleys and toward nearby towns such as Jerome, Sedona and Prescott Valley as you climb the winding road to the site. The campground is a single, large group site (TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1; SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 1 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) designed for groups of up to roughly 100 people, set among tall ponderosa pines that temper summer heat with cool mountain breezes. The site includes a central gathering area with picnic tables, grills and a large fire pit for group cookouts and evening fires, and a vault toilet is on site; there is no drinking water available, so plan to bring your own. An adjacent family picnic area provides a quieter spot for smaller crews, and the short drives into Prescott Valley and Cottonwood will get you to groceries, gas and restaurants. Recreation at the campground leans on the surrounding forest: there are hiking trails nearby that range from short, easy walks to more strenuous climbs, and the tall-pine setting is good for wildlife viewing and relaxed picnicking without the desert heat below. For a wider range of activities, Prescott National Forest offers boating, horse camping and horseback riding, fire lookouts/cabins for overnight stays, and visitor centers; cultural and day-trip options include the artist town of Jerome, Tuzigoot National Monument's Sinagua ruins, and Dead Horse Ranch State Park with mountain biking, canoeing and fishing on the Verde River. To reach Playground Group drive on State Route 89A (about seven miles southwest of Jerome or 13 miles east of Prescott Valley) and continue two miles on Forest Road 104 to the site. Specific fees, reservation policies and seasonal access details aren't provided here, so check current conditions and any permit requirements with the Prescott National Forest office before you go.
