“I find odd that I can never find anyone at the front check in and get return calls from the number that’s posted. ”

Bryan G 3 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Beautiful campground, clean restroom only problem a few sandbars”

Larry P 4 · Oct 2025 · Recreation.gov

“Tar is a beautiful camping area with excellent volunteer staff. Like that it is locked at night so you will not get much non-camping traffic.”

About

Tar Camp Park sits on the Arkansas River at Pool 5, about 6 miles east of Redfield off State Route 46/365, and occupies a forested stretch of riverfront that opens onto rolling cotton fields. The site lies at roughly 193 feet above sea level; winters are generally mild and summers can reach the upper 90s with high humidity, so plan clothing and water accordingly. Wildlife is a regular part of the experience red fox are often seen and a variety of waterfowl inhabit the shorelines and nearby public forests and waterways offer hunting and duck-hunting opportunities. If you want larger-town services or cultural attractions, Little Rock is a short drive away and Pine Bluff has the Arkansas Railroad Museum, regional park facilities, the Martha Mitchell Home and grocery shopping. The campground itself contains 47 campsites in total: 45 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 are tent-only; most sites offer electric and water hookups and each campsite includes a movable lamp post, a grill, a campfire ring and a picnic table. Overnight camping and boat launching are available here, making it a practical base for boating, water sports and fishing anglers report catches of catfish, bass, crappie and bream, and anglers also use tailwaters at nearby locks such as Joe Hardin and Emmitt Sanders. Onshore amenities include a playground, picnic areas, two reservable group shelters (each seating up to 60 people), a rock climbing wall and a basketball court, supporting family day use as well as longer stays. Fees, reservation policies and seasonal closures are not listed here, so contact the managing agency or the park's website before you go to confirm current rates, reservation availability and any access requirements.
