Deerlick Creek Campground sits along the shore of Holt Lake on the Black Warrior-Tombigbee Waterway, a chain of six lakes that together offer 457 miles of shoreline and nearly 40,000 surface acres of water. The campground occupies mixed pine and hardwood forest right at the water's edge, where fall color runs along the banks and wildlife sightings white-tailed deer, squirrels, wild turkey and migratory and bluebirds are common. Water is the headline here: Holt Lake was formed by the damming of the Black Warrior River and draws boaters from across the state for water-skiing, sailing, jet skiing and general powerboating; there are boat launching ramps at nearly all Corps public recreation areas and three private marinas in the BW&T system for fuel, repairs and rentals. Anglers will find bass, crappie, bream and catfish in these waters, and the campground's lakeshore trails and a paved bicycle trail make it easy to mix fishing with hiking, biking and wildlife viewing. Summers are warm expect highs in the 80s and 90s from April through September and the region averages roughly 60 inches of rain annually. The park provides 47 campsites in total: 40 sites configured for both RVs and tents and 7 designated tent-only sites; water and electric hookups are available at most sites. Facilities are practical and family-friendly a swimming beach, showers, a multi-use court and a playground and there's one group picnic shelter that can be reserved for day use. Trails leave from the campground for short hikes along the lakeshore, and the wider BW&T area supports a range of activities from boating and water sports to historic and cultural site visits, picnicking and specialized park sports. Deerlick Creek is northeast of Tuscaloosa and reachable via MacFarland Boulevard/Highway 82 and local connector roads; it sits about 17 miles from the University of Alabama and roughly 13 miles from Ol' Colony Golf Course.
