TONGASS-KETCHIKAN

Last Chance Campground sits in the Ward Lake Recreation Area about 9 miles north of downtown Ketchikan and roughly four miles beyond the Alaska State Ferry terminal, with easy road access from the Tongass Highway. The campground is threaded by Last Chance Creek and bordered by Ward Creek, set among old-growth temperate rainforest of western hemlock and Sitka spruce; you'll hear running water from many sites and can walk the Ward Lake Nature Trail, a 1.3-mile loop, or explore six other nearby trails that branch through the recreation area. A large day-use complex with picnic sites and shelters fronts the lake, and freshwater fishing, wildlife viewing (eagles, spawning salmon, occasional bear along creek edges) and scenic forest walks are the primary draws here the kind of quiet, creekside experience that's closely tied to the forested shoreline of the greater Tongass National Forest and the Inside Passage beyond. The campground is small and practical: there are 18 total campsites 17 that serve both RVs and tents and one designated RV-only site and each site includes a picnic table, campfire ring with grill and a gravel parking spur. Last Chance is designated to be fully accessible; the site infrastructure includes two hand pumps for drinking water and three vault toilets. Firewood may be provided but isn't guaranteed; for assistance or wood, the campground host is stationed about 2 miles away at Signal Creek Campground. Because specific fees, reservation windows and seasonal openings can change, check the Tongass National Forest office or the official reservation site before you go; the road approach from Ketchikan is straightforward, making Last Chance a convenient base for hiking, fishing, picnicking and general wildlife viewing in this part of Southeast Alaska.
