Barbara W ★ 3 · Jun 2025There is NO RV DUMP here nor potable water, even though the website and map indicates there is. We were able to get water, and take showers, in Thorne Bay at the city offices, and the harbor. The site itself was shorter than expected because the picnic table had been moved into the parking area and was too heavy for us to move. It also was a bit overgrown which made it narrow. Since it was rainy while we were there, and we were generally out and about, this didn't impact us too much. The boardwalk along the lake is very pleasant; we shared it with a doe very a brief distance:) The campground is well located for exploring the island, both north and south. It is a bit of a drive back to the ferry for an early departure.

Eagles Nest Campground sits on the shore of Balls Lake on Prince of Wales Island, surrounded by muskeg and the deep green of the Tongass temperate rainforest. The site looks across water toward the foothills and the Thorne Mountains, and an interpretive lakeside trail runs about 1,800 feet with places to pause and watch for wildlife. A longer 2.5-mile loop, the Balls Lake Trail, circles the lake through riparian habitat where swans, kingfishers and ducks are often seen; sockeye salmon run in season and beavers are commonly active along the shore. Canoeing, kayaking and fishing are easy to arrange from the campground the lakeshore has a canoe ramp and day hikers will find a mix of water-side walking and quiet forest scenery rather than steep climbs or alpine viewpoints. The campground is small and straightforward in its amenities: there are 12 total campsites 10 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 2 tent-only sites with single and double-family layouts, picnic tables, campfire rings and vault toilets. The campground sits near Control Creek and is reached by vehicle after taking the Alaska Marine Highway to Hollis and driving across Prince of Wales Island; it lies roughly eighteen miles west of Thorne Bay. The listing specifies those basic facilities but does not list hookups or potable water, so come prepared with your own supplies and power if needed. Because Tongass recreation ranges from boating and fishing to auto touring, hiking and wildlife viewing, plan your trip around seasonal conditions and check the Tongass National Forest office or recreation.gov for current fees, reservation rules and campground status before you go.
