“Very quiet & relaxing spot, can hear stream & fish while have cozy fire. ”
“There was nowhere to put a tent or trailer on site #3. Just a tiny table and fire pit on uneven ground surrounded by bushes.”

Signal Creek Campground sits on the banks of Ward Lake, about 7 miles north of downtown Ketchikan and roughly 4 5 miles up the Tongass Highway from the state ferry terminal. The campground straddles Signal Creek where it empties into the lake and is set in old-growth temperate rainforest dominated by western hemlock and Sitka spruce, so expect thick canopy, mossy groundcover and the constant background of running water. There are 24 campsites in total, and each site is configured to serve both RVs and tents: every site includes a picnic table, a campfire ring with grill and a gravel parking spur and can accommodate up to 10 people. Signal Creek is managed as a year-round facility; potable water is available from two hand pumps during the peak season only, and three vault toilets serve the loop (in winter only the outhouse closest to sites 1 5 remains open). Firewood may be provided occasionally but is not guaranteed, so plan to bring your own if you need it. Recreation here leans toward lake- and trail-based activity. The Ward Lake Recreation Area offers seven trails, including the Ward Lake Nature Trail, a 1.3-mile loop that circles the lake, and a large day-use complex with picnic sites and shelters for larger gatherings. Ward Lake itself draws anglers, canoeists and kayakers, and the creek and surrounding forest offer good opportunities for wildlife viewing eagles, bears and spawning salmon are among the species found in the Tongass. Beyond the campground, the broader Tongass National Forest supports a wide range of activities (auto touring, biking, boating, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, interpretive programs, RV camping, picnicking, visitor centers and winter sports among them), so you can easily combine a quiet lakeside site with longer excursions into fjords, glaciers and coastal waterways. For fees, reservations and current access or seasonal updates (especially winter services and water availability), check the Tongass National Forest or Ketchikan Ranger District website before you go.
