Tie City Campground sits off Happy Jack Road east of Laramie and is laid out as a single teardrop loop containing 17 sites 16 that can handle both tents and RVs and one that is tent-only scattered between a dense stand of aspen, fir and spruce and a small grassy meadow. Each campsite includes a picnic table and a metal campfire ring; the campground also provides vault toilets, trash collection, and a seasonal handpump for water. There are no electrical, potable water, or black-water hookups, but the sites will accommodate trailers and RVs. The Tie City trailhead is right at the campground and opens onto a network of challenging mountain-bike trails that are also groomed or used for cross-country skiing in winter; the South Fork of Lodgepole Creek runs nearby and, across County Road 719 at Yellow Pine, anglers will find brook trout fishing. Tie City is part of the much larger Medicine Bow Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland, a landscape dominated by lodgepole pine, aspen, fir and spruce with grassland pockets at lower elevations; wildlife in the region includes elk, mule deer, pronghorn, moose, black bear, coyote and bobcat. The broader forest offers year-round recreation hiking, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, OHV use, auto touring, climbing (Vedauwoo's granite formations are a popular short drive away), boating and winter sports among them so Tie City can be a basecamp for varied outings. Expect variable mountain weather: the national forest ranges from roughly 5,500 to nearly 13,000 feet and frost or even summer snow and high winds are possible at higher elevations. Handpump water may be available in this campground from July to September; these dates can change because of weather, maintenance, or testing, so bring extra water or call ahead for current conditions and check the Forest Service website for fees and reservation policies. Practice good wildlife safety and leave campsites clean the area supports large mammals that benefit from careful food storage and responsible camping.
