The Yakima River Canyon stretches for 27 miles between Ellensburg and Yakima, where the river cuts through rolling desert hills and massive basalt cliffs that in places rise more than 2,000 feet. The Bureau of Land Management oversees four developed river-access sites along Highway 821 Umtanum (near milepost 16), Lmuma Creek (around milepost 12), Big Pines (milepost 8) and Roza (milepost 7) that together offer 61 campsites: 54 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and seven tent-only sites. Big Pines contains the bulk of the sites and includes two group campsites; Umtanum and Roza tend to see heavy day-use in summer. All four sites are open year-round and provide basic campground infrastructure picnic tables, fire rings, nearby dumpsters and vault toilets but do not offer potable water or RV hookups, so plan to arrive with your own water supply and self-contained systems. Overnight fees are $15 and day-use is $5; reservations are accepted from May 1 through September 30, and campsites operate on a first-come, first-served basis from October 1 through April 30. Cellular coverage is limited in many parts of the canyon, so download maps and leave a trip plan with someone if you'll be out of range. The river here supports a wide range of outdoor activities: family-friendly floating and other water sports on a Class 1 stretch of river, swimming in calmer pools, shoreline and boat fishing for Blue Ribbon trout (catch-and-release only), hiking, picnicking and focused wildlife viewing. The canyon's cliffs and crevices host one of the state's densest concentrations of nesting raptors hawks, eagles and falcons and you may also spot bighorn sheep and mule deer along riparian corridors. If you plan to float, a common route is to put in at Umtanum and take out at Roza, which has a concrete boat launch; note that motorboats are prohibited upstream from Roza. Beyond the campsites, nearby points of interest include the Ringer Road Trailhead and non-motorized trails for birding, as well as the towns of Ellensburg and Yakima, Central Washington University and the Cowiche Canyon trail network for additional hiking and services.
