The Hoh Rain Forest Campground sits where the Hoh River, fed by glacial runoff from Mount Olympus, spills down into a true temperate rainforest an environment that averages about 140 inches of precipitation a year and supports towering old-growth conifers cloaked in mosses and ferns. The campground itself has 66 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, arranged across three loops: 33 sites in Loop A, 8 in Loop B and 25 in Loop C. Most sites include a campfire ring and picnic table; loop restrooms provide drinking water and food lockers. There are no electrical or sewer hookups on site, and the dump and fill station at Hoh is closed indefinitely nearest paid dump/fill (and the closest showers) are at Bogachiel State Park, roughly 23 miles north, with another dump at Kalaloch about 33 miles south. A single group site and one ADA-accessible site serve larger or accessibility-needs parties, and limited firewood is sold in Loop B near the campground host from May through September on a first-come, first-served basis. Access the area from Highway 101 via the Upper Hoh Road, and remember that an Olympic National Park entrance pass is required (purchase at the Hoh entrance station or ahead on recreation.gov); entrance fees are separate from nightly campsite fees. If you're planning a stay, note the 2024 reservation season runs May 23 through September 23 and the park has moved to staggered site releases by loop: Loop A sites become available six months in advance, Loop C sites two weeks in advance, and Loop B sites four days in advance. Outside that reservation window the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis (some sites may be closed in winter). The Hoh Visitor Center, adjacent to the trailhead, is a good first stop for current conditions and interpretive exhibits; it's open daily in summer and on a reduced schedule in shoulder seasons. From the campground you can take short interpretive walks Hall of Mosses (0.8 miles) and Spruce Nature Trail (1.2 miles) or head out on the Hoh River Trail, an out-and-back route you can shorten to popular turn-around points (First River access 0.9 miles; Mineral Creek Falls 2.7 miles; Cedar Grove 4.0 miles; 5 Mile Island 5.0 miles) or extend many miles to Glacier Meadows (17.3 miles) and the Blue Glacier moraine (18.5 miles). Backcountry permits must be reserved online if you plan to backpack beyond the developed area. Pets are not allowed on trails (they are permitted on leash in developed areas such as the campground and picnic areas), and park-wide recreation options include hiking, wildlife viewing, camping and picnicking close to the campground, with boating, paddling, fishing, climbing, horse camping and swimming available elsewhere in Olympic National Park.
