About

Big Meadows Campground sits in the heart of Shenandoah National Park along Skyline Drive, where rolling forested hills open into the broad grassy meadow that gives the area its name. The campground is a short walk from the Byrd Visitor Center (about one mile by trail or sidewalk) and only a five-minute stroll from Big Meadows Lodge and its restaurant, making it easy to mix backcountry hikes with a few creature comforts. From your site you're close to over 500 miles of park trails including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail and three waterfalls within walking distance; many routes lead to viewpoints on the crest of the Blue Ridge or into quieter hollows for wildlife viewing. Expect to see deer, wild turkey, songbirds and occasionally black bear around the meadow, and plan for auto touring along Skyline Drive's 105-mile scenic corridor with 75 overlooks if you prefer sightseeing by car. Limited Wi-Fi is available at the Byrd Visitor Center and Big Meadows Lodge, and cell reception can usually be found near the amphitheater. The campground itself has 215 sites total, of which 165 accommodate both RVs and tents and 50 are tent-only walk-to sites; those 50 walk-to tent sites provide quieter, more primitive pitching options. Sites are arranged across multiple loops A (32 sites), C (21), D (28), E (25), F (6), G (7), H (6) and I (12) and 28 sites are designated generator-prohibited for quieter evenings. Amenities include picnic areas, flush toilets, showers and a dump station, and there are group sites available (group fee $75/night). All campsites are reservation-only through Recreation.gov: most sites can be reserved up to six months in advance while additional allocations are released two weeks and four days before arrival; reservations carry Recreation.gov administrative fees. Standard nightly fees are $30 per site ($15 with an Access or Senior Pass, with ID required at check-in). Note important policies before you go: changes that move a reservation entirely outside the original dates incur a $10 change fee, cancellations are subject to a $10 service fee (with additional forfeiture of the first night's rate if canceled the day before or day of arrival), no-shows are assessed a $20 fee plus forfeiture of the first night, and refunds must be requested within seven days after checkout (emergency closures result in full refunds). Do not use Tanners Ridge Road to reach Big Meadows instead program your GPS to one of the four park entrance stations (Front Royal, Thornton Gap, Swift Run, or Rockfish Gap), and if you need facility-specific information call (540) 999-3231.
