Simpson Springs Campground sits on the eastern edge of Utah's West Desert at the historic Simpson Springs station on the Pony Express National Historic Trail, about 12 miles south of Dugway and reachable from I-80 via Tooele and Highway 36 onto the Pony Express Road. The campground's 20 campsites are all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, and the site carries a year-round fee of $15. The location has a layered history a Pony Express stop and later the site of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the late 1930s and early 1940s before the nearby Dugway Proving Grounds was established which gives the wide, open landscape a quiet, historical character rather than the amenities of a developed park. For up-to-date information on site availability, rules or seasonal conditions call the Salt Lake Field Office at (801) 320-8300. Recreational opportunities radiate outward from the campground rather than being concentrated on a manicured loop: you can walk sections of the Pony Express National Historic Trail directly from camp, ride OHVs and horses on surrounding routes, and explore the scenic backcountry byway and desert hills by bike or on foot while keeping an eye out for local wildlife. Facilities are basic pit toilets are provided and potable water is available seasonally so plan to bring your own supplies when water is off, and expect a simple desert camping experience rather than hookups or full services. The nearby Pony Express historic site offers interpretive information for visitors wanting to connect the terrain with its 19th-century transportation history.
