“Great & roomy site with a good view of the sunset. Note that the restroom does not contain a sink, but there is a working water spigot over the trough in one of the horse corrals. You are in a parking lot so there may be some light traffic for use of the trailhead and restroom.”

Frijole Horse Corral Campground sits about a mile east of the Pine Springs Visitor Center on the north side of U.S. 62/180 at roughly 5,400 feet elevation, and the campground contains a single group campsite (total campsites: 1) configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. Because this site is specifically designed for stock use, you'll find four corrals, hitching posts, water troughs and stock watering tanks, extra (but not level) trailer parking, two RV parking spaces (one paved and accessible), and two tent pads (one raised for accessibility). The area doubles as trailhead parking for the Foothills and Frijole trails, so expect shared daytime use; reserving the site does not guarantee solitude. Practical constraints are worth noting: the corral is about 100 yards from the busy highway so traffic noise including trucks is present around the clock, high winds with gusts over 50 mph are common in winter and spring, and no open fires of any kind are allowed anywhere in the park (only containerized-fuel stoves and lanterns). There are no hookups, showers, or a dump station, so plan to fill holding tanks before arrival; the site allows 1 12 people, the group fee is $60 per night, and all reservations and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov (group cancellations under 14 days incur a $10 service fee plus forfeiture of the first night's use fee). If you're bringing stock or planning to ride, the corral is the logical launching point: riders must begin from Frijole and stock users need a wilderness use permit from the Pine Springs Visitor Center (permits can be issued the day of your trip or up to 24 hours in advance check visitor center hours). Designated stock trails accessible from this area include the Foothills and Frijole trails and longer routes such as the El Capitan Trail, the Guadalupe Peak Horse Trail (to the hitching racks below the summit), Tejas Trail, segments of the Bush Mountain Trail, and portions of the McKittrick Canyon approach; Dog Canyon Road and certain old roads also permit stock use where they provide necessary access. Hikers without stock have many options from Pine Springs too: strenuous outings to Guadalupe Peak or the Bowl (8 9 miles, 2,500 3,000 feet gain), moderate choices like the Frijole/Foothills route, or shorter walks to historic sites such as the Pinery Butterfield stage station and the nearby Frijole Ranch & History Museum. The landscape around the corral blends small oaks and redberry junipers with desert-adapted agaves, yuccas and prickly pear, Hunter Peak/El Capitan/Guadalupe Peak are visible from camp, birdlife is seasonally varied, and the night skies here are remarkably dark just be prepared for the practical realities of wind, highway noise, and the park's strict fire rules.
