“Such a beautiful location and so clean. Ranger Will (a volunteer) was helpful and very friendly. Be sure to stop at Sitting Bull Falls - beautiful oasis that was definitely worth the drive.”
“would be nice to have electrical hookups at RV sites but i understand that is probably difficult”

Dog Canyon sits high on the north side of Guadalupe Mountains National Park at about 6,300 feet, along the end of Queen Highway (NM 137). The campground is remote roughly 70 miles from Carlsbad, NM and about a two-hour, 110-mile drive from the Pine Springs area so plan to fuel up and stock supplies before you head in; open rangeland means cattle are often on the road. The site offers 14 individual campsites in total: 10 tent sites and 4 gravel RV sites, plus a reservable group site for 10 20 people (group fee $60/night; groups larger than 20 require a Special Use Permit). Tent spots are hike-in only (61 178 feet from the parking area), each with a tent pad and picnic table; RV sites have picnic tables but no hookups. Campsite occupancy is limited to six people or two tents per site, and there are no showers, sewer hookups, or dump stations. Important rules to note before you reserve: no open fires anywhere in the park (this includes portable propane fire rings and charcoal) only stoves and lanterns using containerized fuel are allowed and it's your responsibility to review site details and allowable equipment before you arrive, since the park does not provide refunds if a party is barred from a site. Reservations and changes are handled through Recreation.gov (a $10 service fee applies to most modifications and many cancellations; same-day or day-before cancellations forfeit the first night's fee), and the park has limited staffing for general info call (915) 828-3251. The canyon's character comes from its wooded drainages, meadows and grassy hillsides framed by alligator juniper, oaks, maples, madrones, piñon and ponderosa pine, with desert species such as prickly pears, agave and chollas on nearby outcrops. Birdlife is active western scrub jays, acorn woodpeckers and a variety of hummingbirds are common and mule deer are frequently seen in and around camp; evenings bring notably cooler lows than Pine Springs and very clear, dark night skies. Dog Canyon is also a gateway for hiking into the higher Guadalupe country: short walks like the 0.6-mile Indian Meadow Nature Trail give a quick sense of the local mix of trees and meadow, while longer routes climb toward Marcus Overlook (about 4.5 miles round trip with ~800 feet gain, moderate) or Lost Peak (roughly 6.4 miles round trip with ~1,500 feet gain, strenuous). Beyond immediate trails, the park protects the world's most extensive Permian fossil reef and several prominent features Lost Peak, Blue Ridge, West Dog Canyon and the Brokeoff and Cutoff Mountains and the surrounding region offers additional destinations such as Carlsbad Caverns, Lincoln National Forest and White Sands for day trips. The campground is open year-round and sees its highest use March May and September November.
