“Small, generally quiet with great campground host. Vault toilets could use a little help.”

At 1,760 feet in a narrow mountain cove along Paint Creek, Paint Creek Campground offers 20 widely spaced campsites that feel private thanks to screening by rhododendron, hemlock and laurel and frequent streamside views. The campground is set up for single-party use only: all 20 sites are single-occupancy, with 17 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and three tent-only sites (13, 14 and 16). Facilities are modest but functional for back-to-basics camping two vault toilets (one in each loop) and drinking water at the center of the campground and the access road from Greeneville runs south on TN-70 then onto Rollins Chapel Road; the final approach is narrow and has some sharp curves, so take it slowly. If you want a map before you arrive, the Forest Service posts a campground map online; check current status, fees and reservation rules with the Cherokee National Forest office before you go, as seasonal openings and policies can change. The Paint Creek corridor itself supplies most of the recreation: the creek is a summer favorite for swimming, wading and fly-fishing (TWRA stocks rainbow trout through the summer), while Paint Creek Pond an easy drive or bike ride away offers warm-water fishing, cattail-bordered wildlife viewing and morning mist that lingers over the water. Two trailheads within walking distance, Paint Mountain Trail (#7) and Paint Creek Trail (#10), make it easy to turn a campsite into a day hike, and the route toward Hot Springs, NC has become popular with cyclists who follow the corridor's quiet roadways. A handful of 15-foot cascades Kelly, Dudley and Ricker Falls are visible from Forest Road 41 along Paint Creek, and the French Broad River nearby provides class I III rafting options for a change of pace. Be Bear Wise: food and trash must be stored in hard-sided containers or a vehicle when not in use (no attractants in tents); violations are ticketable and unattended food or trash may be impounded by staff, so plan accordingly.
