At about 5,000 feet on the southeast shore of Bismarck Lake, Bismarck Lake Campground sits among scattered aspen groves and Ponderosa pine, with many sites opening onto lake views. The loop holds 20 campsites in total: 19 are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, while one site is tent-only, and sites are widely spaced for a good measure of privacy. Facilities are straightforward and serviceable picnic tables, campfire rings, vault toilets and drinking water are provided, but electrical hookups are not available and the lake is within easy walking distance via a short footpath and boardwalk that includes fishing piers for anglers. Vehicle access to the campground is reached through Custer State Park from the US-16A corridor east of Custer; for facility-specific questions call (605) 574-4402. The campground is a practical base for a wide range of Black Hills activities: the shoreline trail is popular for morning birding and relaxed picnics, while the lake supports boating, swimming and fishing for rainbow and brown trout, sunfish, smallmouth bass, northern pike and catfish. Beyond the immediate shore, the forest offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and OHV routes on moderate terrain, and ambitious day-hikers can tackle Black Elk Peak the highest natural point east of the Rockies where the old Harney Lookout Tower still stands on bare granite. Nearby day trips include wildlife viewing in Custer State Park, visits to Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave and Jewel Cave, and the Needles Highway scenic drive begins only a few miles from the campground. Note that management does not issue refunds for weather-related events; call the number above for the latest access and reservation details.
