“Always a great time camping by the lake! Camp host Darlene is always wonderful and so helpful. We wish the camping season lasted longer though. We would’ve loved to come more in the fall to enjoy a fire.”

Bush Recreation Area sits on the western shore of Loyalhanna Lake in a valley formed by the rolling foothills of the Laurel Highlands, where the headwaters of Loyalhanna Creek begin. The setting is rugged and largely undeveloped, with open water and wooded ridges that attract songbirds and waterfowl good spots for wildlife viewing and bird watching from shore or a paddlecraft. Loyalhanna Lake supports a wide range of water activities: boating is allowed with unlimited horsepower, and the site supports paddle sports with kayak and canoe access and on-site kayak rentals. Anglers will find the lake lively bass tournaments are held here and the lake receives channel catfish stockings and there are abundant opportunities to fish from both moving and still water. For land-based recreation, the West Penn Trail is about a ten-minute drive away for longer bike rides and hikes, and the Loyalhanna Dam area nearby offers interpretive displays and good vantage points over the project. The campground itself offers 43 total sites with a mix to suit different setups: 15 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, 16 RV-only sites, and 12 tent-only sites, ranging from full RV-hookup spots to primitive tent campsites. Every campsite is outfitted with a picnic table and a campfire grill ring, and visitors have access to flushing toilets, drinking water, showers and a dump station on site. Kayak rentals and boating access are provided from the Recreation Area, and the broader park programming includes environmental education, picnicking, playground facilities and specialized park sports sites. Practical details such as fees, reservation policies, seasonal opening dates and any permits or regulations can change, so call the Bush Recreation Area office or consult the managing agency's website before you go; the recreation area is located off PA-981 near New Alexandria/Saltsburg (200 Boat Dock Road, New Alexandria, PA 15670).
