Tompkins Campground sits on the north shore of Cowanesque Lake in Pennsylvania's northern tier, less than a mile from the New York line, surrounded by the rolling ridges of the Endless Mountains on the Allegheny Plateau. The 1,085-acre lake and 17 miles of shoreline are the focus here: boat ramps and overnight mooring make the water easy to use for boating, water sports and casual paddling, while anglers find plenty of action the lake and its streams support a variety of fish species and frequently host tournaments. The 4-mile Moccasin Trail threads through reclaimed fields and small woodlots inside the facility for hikers and wildlife observers, and the North and South Tailrace access points offer additional downstream fishing. Hunters also use the surrounding forests and fields for both small and large game during appropriate seasons, and family-friendly features such as playgrounds, picnic sites and natural-view overlooks keep the campground accessible for kids and less adventurous visitors. The broader recreation area includes opportunities for environmental education and a concession site to support day-use activities. The campground's capacity and services aim to accommodate a wide range of campers: there are 119 total campsites, of which 103 are configured for both RVs and tents and 16 are tent-only (the Hike loop contains the 16 hike-in tent sites). Sites are arranged among named loops Cove (30 sites), Hike (16 sites) and Mead (23 sites) and many shoreline sites offer electrical hookups. Facilities on site include drinking water, hot showers, a dump station, two overlooks, two downstream fishing access points and a 24-site group camping area for organized gatherings. Boat mooring slips are available to campers on a first-come, first-served basis. All reservations and any reservation changes such as cancellations, refunds, transfers or date changes must be made in advance through recreation.gov or by calling (877) 444-6777; they cannot be completed at the campground. Shelter reservations follow the posted fee structure (weekdays $0.00; shelter nonelectric weekends $75.00; shelter electric weekends $100.00), and all visitors should plan around those reservation and fee requirements before arrival.
