“Been going to Loon Lake over 50 years. After being shut down for so many years I thought there would have been improvements, quit the opposite. The playground really needed some TLC, even just a load of chips. The reservation policies really need some changing.”
“I had a wonderful time and the hosts were very nice & helpful. More water would be great. I really miss the showers”
“First time at loon lake, I was pleasantly surprised by how well organized the tent sites were and the restrooms were clean. Sandy beaches at the lake and a large designated swimming area was another pleasant surprise. ”

Loon Lake Recreation Site sits at about 392 feet in the Coast Range, roughly 20 miles east-southeast of Reedsport on OR-38 and under an hour's drive from Winchester Bay. The lake itself is a natural, landslide-dammed basin covering about 260 acres and running nearly two miles long with depths around 190 feet; it has one of the Coast Range's few warm, sandy beaches and a swim area that draws families for waterplay, paddleboarding, kayaking, and small-boat recreation. Forest around the shore is dominated by Douglas-fir, western hemlock, red alder and bigleaf maple, with a dense understory of rhododendron, salal, salmonberry and ferns a setting that supports abundant birdlife (from Steller's jays and osprey to rarer species) and signs of larger mammals such as deer and elk. A short quarter-mile trail beginning at the south end of the day-use area leads onto Elliott State Forest and drops to a small waterfall through an old-growth segment, making it easy to combine a lake day with a quick forest walk. The campground operates seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through September 30 and is managed by the BLM's Coos Bay District; because staffing is limited, check the BLM Loon Lake page or call (541) 756-0100 for current fees, reservation options and conditions. There are 52 campsites total: 45 sites accommodate both RVs and tents, and 7 are tent-only; the layout is organized into two loops Sites 1 33 plus T1 T5 make up 34 sites in the primary loop, and Sites 34 53 comprise the second loop of 18 sites. Campsites feature paved parking pads, a fire ring and picnic table, and most have a tent pad and barbecue grill; double sites include two picnic tables or larger/multiple tent pads. The day-use area includes picnic tables, grills, a fishing dock, boat launch and an amphitheatre, and the campground offers flush toilets and vault toilets as well as a children's play area but there is no potable water on site, so bring all the water you'll need.
