About

Walton Lake occupies a clear, spring-fed basin in the Ochoco National Forest about 32 miles east of Prineville, reached by Highway 26 and a series of county and forest roads. The camping area sits among old-growth Ponderosa pine and open mountain meadows, with aspen and tall willows along the shoreline; most of the 29 total campsites look out over the water. There are 23 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 6 tent-only sites; paved parking spurs, picnic tables and a fire ring with grill are provided at each single site. The campground is laid out in two sections: the South Side is better suited to larger RVs and contains the solar-powered drinking water pump (look for the "Water" signs near the entrance), vault toilets and accessible campsites and toilets, while the North Side favors car and tent camping and also has vault toilets. Two group sites each with three tables and a central fire ring can handle roughly three to four RVs plus several tents, giving larger parties a clear place to gather without splitting up. Walton Lake's recreation is very much water- and trail-oriented: there's a swimming beach, a fishing pier and a boat ramp for small, self-powered craft, and the lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout for shore anglers. A short, 1-mile Walton Lake Trail loops scenic viewpoints around the shore, and the longer 7.5-mile Round Mountain Trail provides multi-use opportunities for hikers and mountain bikers who want more distance. Wildlife is prominent here visitors commonly spot Steller's jays, belted kingfishers, spotted sandpipers and, in season, cinnamon teal and American coots while nearby Big Summit Prairie draws wildflowers and occasional elk, deer and antelope. For practical matters like current fees, reservation windows, seasonal openings and road conditions, check the Forest Service or the local ranger district before you go; the campground's forest setting means access can be affected by seasonal weather and road maintenance.
