Eagle Creek Campground sits on a bluff above Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge, shaded by a classic Douglas fir and maple canopy where osprey often nest overhead. This site has a long Forest Service history it was the first developed campground in the system and the 17 campsites here are all configured to accommodate both RVs and tents, each with a paved parking apron; most sites are fully accessible. Camp layouts are deliberately spaced to give a feeling of privacy, and practical comforts include a central restroom, scattered drinking-water faucets, and a full-time host on site. Be aware that the campground's position above the freeway and adjacent rail line means traffic and train noise are noticeable from many sites, so expect the trade-off of easy Gorge access for less seclusion. The campground is part of the larger Eagle Creek Recreation Area, which provides direct access to the popular Eagle Creek Trail plus a network of day-hike and road-biking routes and connections into Mt. Hood National Forest and the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness for longer overnight trips. River activities and fishing are common on the nearby Columbia River, and interpretive centers, fish hatcheries and bird-watching opportunities are only minutes away: Bonneville Dam's underwater viewing and the Cascade fish hatchery are nearby, Cascade Locks Museum and the sternwheeler are about five minutes east, Multnomah Falls and the Historic Columbia River Highway are a short drive to the west, and Hood River a world-class spot for kiteboarding and wind sports is roughly 20 minutes east. Passes are required for Eagle Creek Recreation Area, so plan to buy the Columbia River Gorge site-specific digital pass and check current conditions before you go; also note that risks increase in recently burned areas, so review local fire-area safety information when planning hikes and backcountry travel.
