Chisholm Trail Ridge Park sits along the broad shore of Waurika Lake, a Corps of Engineers impoundment that spreads across roughly 10,100 acres of water with about 12,000 acres of surrounding public land. The shoreline here slopes gently to the water and is dotted with large shade trees, short stretches of prairie and wooded fingers that reach into four large embayments and a scattering of smaller coves features that make the lake easy to explore by boat and give anglers sheltered places to cast. Boating and water sports are a major draw: the campground provides an accessible dock and a boat ramp, and the open stretches of water are commonly used by skiers and anglers chasing channel and flathead catfish, largemouth and white bass, hybrid striper, crappie, walleye and sunfish. Wildlife is abundant on the project lands about 6,040 acres of which are managed by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation so visitors commonly see white-tailed deer, wild turkey, rabbits and a variety of waterfowl; those same managed lands are open to public hunting for species such as bobwhite quail, mourning dove, wood duck, mallard and teal, subject to state hunting regulations. Practical camping at Chisholm Trail Ridge is straightforward: the park has a total of 95 campsites, and every one of those sites functions for both RV and tent use and is equipped with electric service and accessible water hookups. Families will find a playground and swimming areas nearby, and boaters benefit from the on-site ramp and dock; additional conveniences, supplies and privately owned lodging or concession services are available in the town of Waurika, about six miles to the southeast. The park is part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project at Waurika Lake, so policies, fees, reservation windows and seasonal details are set by the Corps check the Corps' website or the local project office for current reservation procedures, daily fees or any seasonal closures before you go. Access to the park follows Highway 5 northwest out of Waurika and then a short drive on local roads to the Chisholm Trail Ridge entrance, making it an easy base for anglers, boaters and hunters exploring the southern Oklahoma plains.
