Winding Stair Campground sits on the ridge along Oklahoma's portion of the Talimena Scenic Drive (State Highway 1), about two miles west of the US-259 junction, with Emerald Vista immediately adjacent where mountain-top and valley views open up from the campground's high perch. The site serves as a trailhead for the Ouachita National Recreation Trail, making it a convenient base for day hikes or overnight thru-hikes, and the mountain air tends to be noticeably cooler in spring and fall. The campground has 24 developed sites every one configured to serve both RVs and tents with a paved roadway and paved campsite surfaces plus gravel tent pads for pitching a tent; a separate Backpackers Camp next to the main loop provides designated tent pads for lighter-footprint stays. Trees shade the sites throughout the loop; however, there is no potable water or electrical hookups on site, and facilities are limited to vault toilets. Winding Stair operates year-round on a strictly first-come, first-served basis, so visitors must physically arrive to claim and pay for a site. Payment is accepted on site by cash, check, money order or by scanning the posted QR code to pay through the Recreation.gov app (download that app before you arrive, as some areas have limited or no cell service); an honor box/scan-and-pay option for credit and debit cards is also available. Once payment is made on site, refunds or modifications are not offered, so plan accordingly. Nearby recreation options beyond the immediate trail access include auto touring along the Talimena Scenic Byway, fishing and boating at nearby Cedar Lake Recreation Area, horseback riding and horse camping facilities in the region, biking and wildlife viewing throughout the Ouachita National Forest; for campsite-specific questions call the campground phone at (918) 653-2991.
