Cedar Lake Campground sits on the 86-acre lake at about 900 feet elevation in the pine and hardwood ridges of the Ouachita National Forest, roughly 22 miles south of Poteau and about 10 miles south of Heavener. The campground is focused on water- and trail-based recreation: a designated swimming area, boat ramp and fishing piers serve anglers and small boats, and a hiking trail loops around the lake to reveal changing shorelines and tributary inlets. For riders, Cedar Lake is a logical trailhead for the Winding Stair Mountain Equestrian Trails more than 70 miles of marked horseback routes and many of the campground's equestrian sites include electric hookups and nearby corrals. If you want to extend a day trip, the Talimena Scenic Byway climbs to mountain-top viewpoints within about 10 miles, the western terminus of the 192-mile Ouachita National Recreation Trail is at Talihina State Park some 21 miles away, and Heavener Runestone Park is about 14 miles from camp. The campground contains 92 sites in all, with a mix of 35 sites designated for both RVs and tents, 53 equestrian sites and 4 tent-only sites. Site loops are organized for different needs: two North Shore loops (one of 16 sites and a smaller one of 2 sites) and the Sandy Beach loop with 21 sites; Shady Lane (SHRV) sites are equipped with electric, sewer and water hookups, Sandy Beach sites provide electric only, and the North Shore family sites are primitive with no hookups. Group, family and equestrian areas are available; most equestrian sites have electric power and horse corrals are located within the horse camping section. Everyday comforts at the campground include picnic tables, grills, campfire rings, lantern posts, flush toilets, warm showers, drinking water and picnic pavilions. The wider forest supports many other activities auto touring, biking, OHV use, fire lookout/cabin overnight stays, wildlife viewing and extensive hiking and practical reservation policies note that refunds may be requested in cases of death, medical emergency, storm events or mechanical failure. Fall color typically arrives from the last two weeks of October into the first two weeks of November, which is a popular time to visit.
