About

Oak Hill Campground sits on the west side of Lake Vesuvius, overlooking the 143-acre lake and tucked into a mixed hardwood pine forest dominated by mature oaks. Water is the obvious draw here: the campground is only a short walk from boat launches, sandy swimming areas and shorelines where anglers chase bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill. Hikers and riders will find access to more than 40 miles of trails that begin at or near the recreation area; a short spur from the campground links to the Rock House Trail, which climbs to a cave once used by Native Americans. Beyond paddling and fishing, the wider Wayne National Forest around Lake Vesuvius supports a broad range of outdoor pursuits biking, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, auto touring and hunting among them so the campground is a convenient base for a variety of day trips and loop outings. The campground has been recently renovated to add modern conveniences while keeping a forested, lakeside character: there are 31 total campsites, 22 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 9 RV-only sites, plus a group site that will hold up to 50 people. Individual sites can accommodate up to eight people and include picnic tables, lantern posts and campfire rings with grills; the facility also provides electric hookups, water hookups, accessible flush and vault toilets, showers and an on-site dump station. Some sites are available first-come, first-served, and the posted fee structure charges a $15 basic camping fee with an additional $5 electric hookup fee when using power ($20 total for an electric site). The campground is about nine miles north of Ironton off State Route 93 at the Lake Vesuvius Road, making it an easy stop for travelers exploring the southern reaches of Wayne National Forest.
