“The camping was great! Not a fan of the loud Halloween decorations the site host had up that we’re going off every 30 seconds from 4-10. Really made the night un-enjoyable. Morning was great, though and the site itself was nice. ”

Iron Ridge Campground sits on a wooded ridge above 143-acre Lake Vesuvius in the Vesuvius Recreation Area of southeastern Ohio's Wayne National Forest. The site is set among mature eastern hardwoods and rolling hills that open onto more than 40 miles of multi-use trails; a half-mile hiking path links the campground to the lake shore, and the 8-mile Lake Shore Trail makes a complete loop around the water. Boating, swimming and bank or boat fishing are the area's primary draws anglers commonly catch bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill and trailheads for day hikes and horseback rides begin at or near the campground. Shorter footpaths lead to Rock House Cave, a tunnel-like sandstone cavity once used as shelter by Native Americans, and the nearby forest supports a wide range of outdoor activities found across Wayne National Forest, including wildlife viewing, biking, picnicking, OHV riding on designated routes, and auto-touring; the town of Ironton is under 10 miles away for supplies or a quick meal. The campground contains 32 total campsites: 21 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents and 11 are tent-only. Most RV sites offer electric hookups; the electric hookup carries a $5 fee in addition to the $15 basic camping fee (so an electric site totals $20). Some campsites are managed on a first-come, first-serve basis check current reservation options before you go and each site allows up to eight people. All sites include a picnic table and a campfire ring with grill; accessible flush toilets, showers and drinking water are available, and a dump station is on site. Water access is split: campsites 9, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 share water spigots, while the remaining sites have individual water hookups. For up-to-date information on reservations, seasonal openings, and any vehicle or horse restrictions, consult the Wayne National Forest or Vesuvius Recreation Area contact before arriving.
