Hunter Cove sits on the eastern end of Harlan County Lake in south-central Nebraska, a mostly forested campground set into the mixed-grass prairie of the Republican River Valley. The campground is open year-round and provides a substantial base for exploring the lake: there are 128 campsites in total, 108 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 20 tent-only sites, with sites offered both with and without electric hookups. The main park road is hard-surfaced for easier access, while interior roads are gravel; a fish-cleaning station with a grinder and running water sits near the park entrance. You reach Hunter Cove by heading south from US-80 via Highway 183 toward Alma and then west on Highway 136 toward Republican City, with the campground located on the east side of Harlan County Lake. Activity options spread across the campground and the larger lake area. At Hunter Cove you'll find two playgrounds, a volleyball court and a boat ramp; two full-service marinas on the lake's east end support boating and water sports. The lake supports a robust fishing program walleye, wipers, white bass, northern pike and channel catfish are commonly targeted and the surrounding lands are used for hunting (pheasant, quail, prairie chicken, white-tailed and mule deer, turkey, waterfowl, rabbit and squirrel). Harlan County Lake also offers hiking trails of varying lengths and styles, with an equestrian trail a short drive away and an off-road vehicle trail near Republican City. For practical matters like current fees, reservations, and concession or private-lodge services in the area, check with Nebraska Game and Parks before your trip.
