“A good short-term stopover but the road in is very rough washboard dirt for about ¾ mile...otherwise OK.”
“Newly renovated and relatively quiet campground, nice and clean facilities, electric plugins at all sites, optimally located at a trailhead as well as next to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, saw northern lights several nights. Definitely my favorite campground in the area!”
“Very quiet campground. Clean pit toilets. Price is very reasonable with electricity. ”

CCC Campground sits in the rugged badlands of the Dakota Prairie National Grasslands just off Highway 85, with colorful buttes rising around the loops and the Little Missouri River running along the campground's northern edge. The site provides 31 RV sites each with a picnic table, a fire ring and grill, and paved parking pads long enough for rigs up to about 60 feet and horses are permitted in marked campsites. Basic facilities include three vault toilets and seasonal water from a hand pump (typically on from Memorial Day to Labor Day, weather permitting). Payment is a pay-and-scan system: download the Recreation.gov app before you arrive and scan the QR code to pay; cash is also accepted using fee envelopes at the fee tubes. Overnight fees are $10 per night (reduced to $5 per night with a Senior Annual Pass, Senior Lifetime Pass, or Access Pass), and a small number of sites (five) are available for reservation in advance while the remainder are first-come, first-served. The campground is a good base for long and short excursions: the Maah Daah Hey Trail threads through the area (about 150 miles in total) and connects here via the Sunset Loop and an 11-mile loop to the Long X Trail, offering dramatic badlands and prairie views. You'll likely see pronghorn, mule and white-tailed deer, and occasionally bighorn sheep; spring and summer are especially productive for birding and plant enthusiasts. Recreational opportunities in and around the grasslands include hiking, horseback riding and horse camping, biking, hunting, fishing and boating on the Little Missouri, and wildlife viewing. Practical rules are important here: fireworks are prohibited, pack out all trash, and never leave campfires unattended extinguish them "dead out." Motorized vehicles must stay on designated roads and trails (with motorized travel to a campsite allowed within 300 feet of a road or trail), some areas are designated non-motorized, and visitors should wash vehicles to avoid spreading weed seeds. Winter can bring snow and extreme temperatures, so be prepared for cold conditions even in early spring or late fall, and follow Leave No Trace guidance for human waste and trail etiquette (yield to horses and give riders a wide, calm pass).
