Cottonwood Campground sits along the Little Missouri River in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, about five miles north of the park entrance near Medora. The river and the stand of cottonwood trees shape the site's character you'll find a mix of shade and open sun at most campsites, cool river water for a summer dip, and cottonwoods that turn a clear gold in autumn. Wildlife is part of the everyday scene here: bison are sometimes seen moving through the campground on their way to the river, and the tree-lined banks attract songbirds and other riparian species, making morning and evening birdwatching rewarding. The broken badlands landscape that Roosevelt knew is the backdrop; Peaceful Valley Ranch is only a few miles away and is noted locally for excellent night-sky viewing if you want to step beyond the campground after dark. Practical amenities are straightforward and geared to self-sufficient camping: Cottonwood has 37 sites in total 31 that accommodate both RVs and tents and 6 tent-only sites plus a reservable Group Site (site #25) that holds 7 20 people. Individual sites can hold up to six people and two vehicles; all wheeled vehicles and trailers must remain on roadways or pads. The campground is open year-round and provides toilets, drinking water, picnic tables and a water fill station (available through October 1 each year), but there are no electrical or sewer hookups and no dump station. Trails in the park are within easy reach for hikers the broader park offers many miles of routes for day hikes and the area supports auto touring, biking, horse camping, picnicking and wildlife viewing. Medora, with restaurants, shops and the Medora Musical, lies about five miles south; the town is reached from Interstate 94 (Exits 24 and 27), and is roughly 133 miles west of Bismarck and about 27 miles east of the Montana line. Reservations for the group site open the first business day of March for the upcoming summer season (look up "Cottonwood Group Site (ND)" on the park reservation page).
