“I travel up to Bismarck every year and really enjoy stopping here for a week. Great internet, shore fishing, and walking around paths. Such a great park and I’m usually the only one there during the week. I don’t think there’s better sunrise and sunsets anywhere.”
“Great little site, peaceful and quiet for this time of year. 13 lined squirrels put on a show daily. Enjoyed Bismarck’s Buckspot Junction.”

Hazelton Recreation Area sits on the east bank of the Missouri River where Lake Oahe widens into long, prairie-lined water. The lake itself created by Oahe Dam under the Pick Sloan plan runs 231 miles from near Pierre, South Dakota up to Bismarck, North Dakota and offers 2,250 miles of shoreline made up of mixed-grass prairie with trees dropping into occasional steep draws. That setting makes Hazelton a straightforward base for water-focused days: a paved boat ramp with a large parking area, adjacent picnic tables and a fish-cleaning station put you on the water quickly for walleye, northern pike and yellow perch. Beyond boating and water sports you'll find good opportunities for bird watching, wildlife viewing and shoreline fishing; the broader Lake Oahe area also supports hunting on many public acres (deer, pronghorn, pheasant, grouse and waterfowl among the species reported) and recreational routes for biking and auto touring that follow Highway 1804 south of Bismarck. The campground itself has 30 campsites that accommodate both tents and RVs; of those, 12 sites include 50-amp electrical hookups while the remaining 18 are primitive. Each site comes with a picnic table and campfire ring, and vault toilets and a small playground serve the loop. Practical access is simple: Hazelton is located roughly 25 miles south of Bismarck along University Drive/Highway 1804, with the recreation area on the east side of the road. Reservations and payments are handled through Recreation.gov (or by calling 1-877-444-6777), with payment charged in full when you complete a booking; note a $10 non-refundable online reservation fee may apply for some facilities and a $10 service fee will be charged for reservation changes or cancellations. For questions about on-site facilities call the local number at (701) 255-0015.
