“What a great camping experience. Camping so near the beach with electric and water was super. The only negative was that the 30 amp receptacle showed signs of melting. Out of caution we decided to use the 50 amp instead. ”

Oregon Inlet Campground occupies the northern edge of Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the east side of the barrier island, a short walk through sea-oat draped dunes to the Atlantic shoreline and a quick drive south to the rips and piers at Oregon Inlet. The campground sits just south of Nags Head along NC-12, immediately before the Bonner Bridge, putting the services of town within easy reach while keeping you close to open beach and prime surf and saltwater fishing. The ocean-side beach is reachable on foot from most sites and can also be driven with a Cape Hatteras Off-Road Vehicle Permit; calmer water on the sound side is accessed at the public boat launch at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, where anglers, paddleboarders and small-boat users launch for crabbing, clamming and estuary fishing. Nearby sights include Bodie Island Lighthouse about four miles to the north (climb tickets are sold the same day at 7 a.m. through recreation.gov) and Coquina Beach Day Use Area across Highway 12, which is vehicle-free and staffed with lifeguards from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Practical details are straightforward: the campground has a total of 234 sites, broken down as 83 sites that can accommodate both RVs and tents, 81 RV-only sites, and 70 tent-only sites. The site layout is organized into three loops plus a single group site the official counts list Loop A: 32 sites (A - Tent Only: 34 sites), Loop B: 48 sites (B - RV or Tent: 42 sites), Loop C: 34 sites (C - RV or Tent: 39 sites), and Group - RV or Tent: 1 site each loop is served by a bathhouse with flush toilets, potable water and heated outdoor showers. Every campsite includes a paved parking pad, picnic table and charcoal grill; a limited number of sites offer RV hook-ups. A dump and potable water fill station are located directly across Highway 12 at the Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and are free for campers. Reservations are handled exclusively through recreation.gov (a service fee may apply for changes and will be withheld from refunds for cancellations); for facility-specific questions call (252) 475-9018. Activities available in the seashore include auto touring, camping, fishing, hiking, paddling, snorkeling, swimming and wildlife viewing, so whether you're setting up a tent for shell hunting at dawn or rigging up for a day of inlet fishing, Oregon Inlet puts you close to the water and the conveniences you'll need.
