Cheoah Point Campground sits on a wooded peninsula along the 2,800-acre Lake Santeetlah in the Nantahala National Forest, at about 1,760 feet elevation. The site is framed by mature hardwoods and steep shoreline, so many of the 23 total campsites look out over the water; all 23 are configured to serve both RVs and tents, and each site can accommodate up to 10 guests and 2 vehicles. Six of the sites offer electrical service (15/30/50 amp), and every campsite is outfitted with a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill. The campground provides flush toilets, hot showers and drinking water, which makes it a comfortable base for multi-day stays even as the layout follows the natural, hilly terrain campers with very large rigs should confirm site dimensions and road access before arrival. From Robbinsville the area is accessed northward on Highway 129 and then a short drive onto Thunderbird Mountain Road to the Cheoah Point turnoff. The lake is the focal point for activity: anglers fish for trout, walleye, several kinds of bass, bream and crappie, while boaters, canoeists, swimmers and even personal watercraft users find ample water to explore. Trails begin nearby Wauchecha Bald Trail starts easy before getting steeper and eventually provides a route to the Appalachian Trail so hikers can layer short lakeside walks with longer ridge outings. Beyond the campground, the wider National Forest supports auto touring, biking, climbing, horse camping and horseback riding, OHV riding, hunting, interpretive programs, picnicking and wildlife viewing; Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also within a reasonable day-trip distance. Fees, reservation windows and seasonal openings are set by the U.S. Forest Service, so check the National Forest or Recreation.gov pages for current rates, campsite availability and any access notices before you go.
