Downstream Campground sits just below Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River, where a shady grove of cottonwoods softens a grassy campground and three small fishing ponds including the scenic Winter Harbor provide quiet places to cast a line. The setting is part of the much larger Fort Peck Project, whose broad reservoir and surrounding prairie country support boating, water sports, and long stretches of shoreline for anglers; Fort Peck Lake is widely known for walleye and also produces sauger, smallmouth bass, lake trout, chinook salmon and northern pike. Three miles of paved nature trails along the river and nearby auto routes through the Leo B. Coleman pasture and the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge make this a good base for wildlife viewing and birding (elk, deer and bison are often seen in the area). The Fort Peck Dam Interpretive Center and Museum, open Friday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers displays on dam history, local fossils and regional natural history, and a disc golf course called "The Fortress" (installed in 2021) provides a casual on-site diversion with discs available at the gate house. The campground itself has 94 sites total: 73 are set up for RVs, 18 are tent-only, and 3 sites are configured to accommodate both RVs and tents. The park is divided into named loops Lismas (43 sites), New Deal (21), Wheeler (12), Faranuf (10), plus one Group site and day-use shelter clusters at Kiwanis Park (4) and West End (3) and many sites offer electrical hookups (71 sites have electricity). On-site amenities include flush and vault toilets, hot showers, playgrounds, a basketball court, horseshoe pits, a dump station and a fish-cleaning station; picnic shelters and two overnight group-use areas are available for reservation. Access is off Highway 117/Yellowstone Road near the town of Fort Peck (reachable from Glasgow, Nashua and I-94 via MT-24/200), but note that some access roads to remote areas around the lake can become impassable in bad weather. Reservations, fees and cancellations are handled through Recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777; for campground-specific questions call 406-526-3224.
