Love staying here! Beautiful place.
Teresa B ★ 5 · May 2024
This camp ground was soooo peaceful and quiet. It seems like its in the middle of nowhere, which was great but also slightly creepy because I was all by myself. I stopped on my way to and from Texas for an event. I will drive the 12 hours again to go to this camp ground again. Almost nooooo cell service so know that and be prepared before you arrive. If you like to fish, definitely bring your gear to fish.

About

Marathon Lake sits in Smith County around a 50-acre impoundment that carries the name of the Marathon Lumber Company, which closed in 1929. The recreation area centers on a small sandy beach and a boat launch, and the lake is stocked with catfish, bass and crappie (bream fishing is allowed), so anglers find plenty to do from shore or a small boat. A 1.7-mile hiking trail loops through the pine and mixed hardwoods around the lake, and the day-use areas include 14 picnic tables, two reservable pavilions (call the forest office to reserve), BBQ grills and a sand volleyball court (note: no ball provided). Two bath houses with warm showers, flush toilets and water fountains serve the site, and a volunteer campground host is typically on duty to help with orientation and questions. Camping at Marathon Lake is strictly first-come, first-served you must arrive in person to pay and claim a site; if available on arrival you may be able to use the Recreation.gov mobile app's Scan and Pay feature by scanning the on-site QR code, so it's wise to download the app before you come because cell service can be spotty. The recreation area has three campsites in total: one site that accommodates both RVs and tents and two tent-only sites; central services include the bath houses, a dump station and trash facilities. For group needs, the two pavilions can be reserved through the local Forest Service office (601-469-3811), which also staffs the location; the physical address is 3451 CR 520 (Forest Service Road 520) near Homewood, about 15 miles southeast of Forest, MS and roughly 25 miles northeast of Raleigh, MS, with access from Morton-Marathon Road.
