Twiltley Campground is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' only full-service campground at Okatibbee Lake, sitting along the lake's shoreline in eastern Mississippi about eight miles north of Meridian on State Route 19. The looped campground contains 64 campsites in total, and all 64 sites are configured to serve both RVs and tent campers; many sites include electrical hookups and a pay phone is available on site. Pets are welcome but must be kept on a six-foot (or shorter) leash. Practical matters are straightforward: fees are handled as Credit Card Transactions Only, and because this is a Corps-managed facility you'll want to check the Corps of Engineers website or contact the reservation line for up-to-date site availability and any seasonal closures before you go. The broader Okatibbee Lake project opens a lot of ways to spend your days: the lake itself covers roughly 4,000 acres of water in the Pascagoula River Basin, and anglers will find structure-rich fishing with beaver flowages, stump beds and old creek channels where largemouth bass, crappie and bream concentrate. The recreation area provides four boat ramps and three designated swimming areas around the lake, plus trails and picnic spots for hiking and wildlife viewing eagles and hawks are commonly seen and the Corps leases about 6,900 acres of adjacent land and flooded woodlands to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks for hunting and wildlife management. If you want to explore beyond the lake, Chicasawhay and Okatibbee Creeks flow upstream through the Okatibbee State Wildlife Area, and the long, warm summers (typical highs from 70 to 98°F) make water sports, boating and camping the primary draws for families and anglers alike.
