About

Greenville Recreation Area sits on the north end of Wappapello Lake along the St. Francis River in the southeastern foothills of the Ozark Mountains, on the original footprint of Old Greenville City. The shoreline here threads a series of wooded coves, gravel bars and rocky bluffs, and the campground's grounds are threaded with history: the Memory Lane trail follows old foundations and streets, and the Greenville Trail a three-mile hike or bike route links the campground with the modern town of Greenville. The day-use zone contains 14 picnic sites, a playground, a basketball court, a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, a covered day-use shelter and a boat ramp with a courtesy dock for quick access to the lake. Within the campground you'll find showers and a children's play area; the site inventory totals 96 campsites in all, with 94 sites configured to serve both RVs and tents, one RV-only site and one tent-only site. Recreation ranges from casual family outings to more gear-forward pursuits: anglers come for largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, white bass and channel catfish, boaters and paddlers explore the coves and open stretches of the St. Francis, and hunters and trappers use the roughly 44,000 acres of public land around the lake. Greenville also hosts a calendar of community events the Black Powder Rendezvous, Old Greenville Days and a Halloween Boo Bash are recurring highlights and is a useful base for exploring nearby trail systems, including the horse-friendly Ozark Trail; Mingo National Wildlife Refuge sits about 31 miles away, Sam A. Baker State Park about 14 miles and Lake Wappapello State Park roughly 21 miles. The recreation area is located about one mile south of Greenville on Highway 67; the site is seasonally staffed (generally mid-March through late November) call (573) 224-3884 during staffed periods or (573) 222-8562 for general information and current fees, reservation policies and hookup availability before you go.
