“Great place to camp, sit by the water! Our favorite place to come ”
“Nice and quire on our trip, the site itself was not as level or user friendly for a 33 ft camper lot 11, did not leave much room to park the truck. Overall nice area no cell service which I did not mind. Will go back just a different lot number. ”

MARK TWAIN
Open in Google Maps ↗
Silver Mines sits along a rugged stretch of the St. Francis River in Mark Twain National Forest, where Precambrian granite and felsite outcrops and the footprint of historic mining shape the landscape. A 2-mile Silver Mines Trail follows both sides of the river and connects several riverside picnic spots, while a 1.2-mile spur leads to a conservation area with notable rock formations and viewpoints of the river. Portions of the river are suitable for swimming and fishing; in spring, higher flows turn sections of the St. Francis into Missouri's only whitewater river, drawing kayakers and when flows permit an annual competition held the third weekend of March. Millstream Gardens Conservation Area and the Tiemann Shut-ins lie just a few miles west on Highway 72, offering additional scenic riverbeds and short hikes within easy reach of the campground. The campground offers 49 total campsites: 36 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents and 13 tent-only sites, plus several large group sites that can hold up to 75 and 100 people. Sites vary in character parking spurs may be asphalt, grass, gravel, or dirt and a number of spaces include 30-amp electric hookups; all sites provide picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Visitors will find accessible vault toilets and drinking water on site, and additional campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Access to Silver Mines is most direct from Fredericktown, a few miles east on Highway 72 and County D, and the area is reached from St. Louis by following I-55 south and Highway 67 to Fredericktown, then heading west on Highway 72. Beyond river swimming, fishing, kayaking, and the trails immediately adjacent to the campground, the broader Mark Twain National Forest supports a wide range of outdoor pursuits biking, boating, horseback riding and horse camping, OHV use, hunting, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and auto touring so campers can combine a riverside base with many other recreational options.
