About

Cross Lake Recreation Area sits on the eastern shore of Cross Lake in central Minnesota's lake country, with tall pines lining campsites and two sandy beaches that make it easy to slip into water-based days. The site is part of the Whitefish Chain and the broader Mississippi River Headwaters Lakes Project, giving campers access to 13 natural lakes that together account for about 13,660 acres of water and roughly 119 miles of shoreline the same waterways that feed into the Headwaters of the Mississippi. The campground is just north of Brainerd and immediately adjacent to the town of Crosslake, so grocery runs or a quick walk to the paved community bike trail are simple; Crow Wing State Park and the Chippewa Lookout on the Mississippi are also nearby for anyone wanting a glimpse of regional history and river views. The campground contains 122 campsites in total: 116 sites that accommodate both RVs and tents, plus 6 tent-only sites, and a solid roster of facilities including two accessible hot shower buildings, a boat ramp, floating docks for boat parking, a dump station, a playground, and two picnic shelters. Two accessible fishing piers serve anglers on both Cross Lake and the Pine River, and onsite beaches and stable launch access make boating, canoeing, kayaking, water-skiing and fishing straightforward summer options; the recreation area also supports hiking, picnicking, wildlife viewing, environmental education opportunities, historic and cultural interpretation, specialized sport areas, and winter sports when conditions allow. Practical policies to note: reservations must check in within 24 hours of the scheduled arrival or the reservation can be cancelled, and changes to an existing reservation carry a $10 non-refundable modification fee (modifications may be made online or by calling Recreation.gov at 877-444-6777).
