“One of the best campgrounds of its kind in the state. Large campsites, peaceful setting, and a great campground host. We go frequently every summer. The bathrooms with proper flush toilets and a shower is also great!”
“North Country hiking trail going past the campground was a positive.”
“We enjoyed the facilities. The kids loved the lake and there is a good hiking trail (North Country Trail) going past the campground for those that want hiking options.”

Nichols Lake South Campground sits on the lake's southern shore inside the Huron-Manistee National Forests, offering a compact, well-served base for water-focused recreation. The campground contains 28 sites, each on a paved spur and sized to accommodate both RVs and tents; every site includes a picnic table and a fire ring. You'll find drinking water, flush toilets and coin (or free check current info) showers on site, and a wood ramp and stairs that lead down to the water along with a short lakeside path for shore fishing. A small sandy swimming beach and an accessible fishing pier are available; swimming areas are marked with buoys but there are no lifeguards, and ice fishing is a common winter activity. A paved boat launch at the campground makes it easy to get a bass boat or kayak on the water. Fishing and trail access are two of the campground's strongest draws. Nichols Lake is about 160 acres and supports bass, bluegill, pumpkinseed, black crappie and northern pike, with shore, pier and boat fishing options. The North Country National Scenic Trail runs through the site near the boat ramp, linking you into long-distance routes as well as shorter day hikes for different levels of experience. The campground is roughly a short drive west from M-37 between Baldwin and White Cloud; the small towns of Woodland, Bitely and Brohman lie only about two miles to the south for supplies. For current fees, reservation windows, seasonal openings and any vehicle or length restrictions, check the U.S. Forest Service site or recreation.gov before you go. In the wider Huron-Manistee forest you'll also find opportunities for auto touring, biking, horseback riding, OHV routes, interpretive programs and wildlife viewing if you want to expand beyond the lake.
