Cathryn F ★ 5 · Sep 2024Great location, wonderful space to have a gathering. We were lucky to be there setting up when a Forest Service employee was there doing their routine Pavilion check and they were very helpful with extra cleaning and trash bags since there was a bit of leftover party from the folks who rented the space before us. Thanks to the Ottawa employees for keeping the harbor looking so nice!

The Black River Harbor Pavilion sits on the Lake Superior shore of Michigan's Upper Peninsula as part of the larger Black River Harbor Recreation Area, and its stone-and-wood shell built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s still defines the day-use area. The enclosed pavilion has a working fireplace and flush toilets, and the harbor area offers a compact but full set of water-oriented amenities: docking and fuel for day and transient boaters, a boat launch, a sandy Lake Superior beach, and a large picnic area with a swing set. A suspension bridge over the Black River connects the picnic area to trails that lead past five waterfalls and down to a sand-and-pebble beach; the North Country National Scenic Trail runs through the recreation area and provides access to all five falls and a roughly 12-mile route that reaches Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park. Visitors will find the campground tucked among hemlock and pine at about 840 feet elevation on a bluff with clear views toward Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands, so the site mix here centers on water access, hiking, fishing, swimming, and wildlife viewing. For practical planning, be aware that the developed campground at Black River Harbor is very small: there is one campsite total, configured to serve both tents and RVs, and the day-use pavilion and other facilities are subject to posted alerts. Onsite services include vault toilets and a pressurized water system; docking, fuel, and a boat launch support boating and fishing (the Black River Harbor Boating Club runs an annual Labor Day fishing derby). Recreation use is fee-based: the stated recreation fee is $100 per day, and reservations carry a non-refundable reservation fee ($8 online, $9 by phone). If you reserve, cancel at least 14 days before arrival to receive refunded recreation fees minus a $10 cancellation fee and the reservation fee; cancellations less than 14 days before check-in forfeit the entire payment. The harbor is located in Gogebic County about 15 miles north of Bessemer accessible by heading north off U.S. Highway 2 toward the harbor day-use area so check Recreation.gov and the site's alert notices before you go for current rules, seasonal details, and any changes to services.
