About

Black River Harbor Campground sits where the Black River eases into Lake Superior, surrounded by stands of pine, hemlock and mixed hardwoods. The campground contains 37 sites, each configured to accept both RVs and tents; sites are wooded with partial shade and generous clearings so you won't feel shoehorned in. About five sites sit within a few hundred feet of Lake Superior, while the rest are tucked along gentle rises that give the feeling of being inside the forest as you fall asleep to the sound of wind in the trees. Practical infrastructure is straightforward: two concrete vault toilet buildings bookend the loop and ten pressurized water spigots are spaced through the campground for easy access. A short walk across a footbridge takes you into the Black River Harbor Recreation Area, where a CCC-era pavilion and a large grassy picnic zone open onto the harbor, sand beach swimming areas and a boat ramp that will accept almost any trailered craft; parking for trucks and boat trailers is ample. Outdoors options cluster tightly here: the harbor area is one of the few local public access points to Lake Superior, offering fishing, boating and fishing charter departures from the dock, while trails along the Black River lead to a series of waterfalls look for the tannin-stained water that comes from hemlock stands upstream. Fees are separate for camping and day use: campsites are $16 per night; use of the nearby recreation area and boat landing requires a $5 per-vehicle day fee from May 15 September 30 (or a seasonal pass for $30 that covers Lake Ottawa, Sylvania and Black River Harbor). Reservations carry an $8 online or $9 phone fee (non-refundable), and cancellation refunds follow the Forest Service policy: cancel at least two days before arrival for a refund minus a $10 cancellation fee and the reservation fee; cancel the day before or day of arrival and you forfeit the first night's fee in addition to the cancellation and reservation fees (one-night reservations are non-refundable). Golden Age/Interagency Senior and Access Pass discounts are accepted with presentation. The campground is reached east of Ironwood via Powderhorn Road and County Road 513 to the Black River Harbor Recreation Area, placing it conveniently near both river hikes and Lake Superior access for anglers, photographers and anyone looking to explore waterfalls and shoreline in the Ottawa National Forest.
