SLEEPING BEAR DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE
Open in Google Maps ↗
Platte River Campground sits in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore amid mixed hardwood and conifer forest less than two miles from Lake Michigan and within easy walking distance of the Platte River. The campground totals 171 sites: 134 sites are configured for both RVs and tents, 7 are RV-only, and 30 are tent-only; these are arranged across five developed loops (Loop 1 has 42 sites, Loop 2 has 22, Loop 3 has 26, Loop 4 has 51) plus 25 walk-in sites and five group sites. Sites are practical and straightforward each has a campfire ring and a picnic table and many RV spaces are back-in or pull-through with electric hookups. Every loop includes restrooms with flush toilets and sinks, and hot showers are available; the group sites are hike-in, tent-only, restrict groups to no more than 25 people, and do not permit pets or RVs. The facility is open year-round: expect summer daytime highs in the upper 70s to 90°F (25 32°C) with nights in the 50s 70°F (10 25°C), while winters are cold (daytime highs around 20 30°F, lows in the teens and 20s) and snow is typically on the ground from late November through March. Recreation spills outward from the campground you can hike directly onto the Platte Plains trail network, which offers more than 25 miles (40 km) of routes including connections to trails leading to the primitive White Pine backcountry campground, or walk down to the river for paddling and fishing. Canoe rentals are available at Platte River Point, where the river meets the lake and where there is drive-in beach access; the broader park also supports auto touring, biking, hunting (where permitted), swimming and other paddling opportunities. Remember that an entrance fee for Sleeping Bear Dunes is charged per vehicle in addition to any camping fees; the park accepts federal interagency passes and lists a $25 vehicle entrance fee (1 7 days) and a $45 annual campground/park pass as of October 2023, and staffed locations accept card payment only (no cash or checks) effective March 1, 2023. For planning and local details call (231) 326-4700 (or toll free (877) 444-6777); the campground's physical address is 5685 Lake Michigan Road, Honor, MI 49640.
