D.H. Day Campground sits in the northern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore along M-109 between Empire and Glen Arbor, surrounded by northern hardwoods and pockets of conifer. The site count is fixed and straightforward: 81 campsites in all, split into 56 RV sites and 25 tent sites, arranged across three loops a Generator loop with 30 sites, an Upper loop with 46 sites, and a small Lower loop of 5 sites. The campground feels deliberately rustic: sites offer a parking area, a large picnic table, a fire ring and a tent pad, with shared water spigots and vault toilets rather than full hookups. Firewood is sold on site through a self-serve vending trailer. Campsites are within a short walk generally no more than five minutes of the Lake Michigan beach, and summer daytime temperatures typically sit in the upper 70s to 90°F (25 32°C) with nights cooling into the 50s to 70°F (10 25°C). D.H. Day is open (weather permitting) from April 27 through the last Sunday in November; reservations are required from May 1 through October 15. Beyond the campsites themselves, the campground is a practical jumping-off point for the park's mix of sand, water and forest. You can swim, fish, paddle a canoe or kayak right from the shoreline near the campground, and the multi-use Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail runs through the site, opening more than 20 miles (32 km) of hiking and biking. Rentals for bikes and canoes are available in nearby Glen Arbor, and the historic village of Glen Haven is about a 15-minute walk; the Dune Climb, Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and the Alligator Hill Trail are short drives away. Practicalities to note before you arrive: Sleeping Bear Dunes charges an entrance fee per vehicle separate from camping fees (current vehicle fees reviewed October 2023 are $25 for 1 7 days or $45 for an annual pass), the park accepts standard federal interagency passes but does not honor the Michigan Recreation Passport, and staffed park locations accept card payment only as of March 1, 2023. Free hot showers are available 17 miles (27 km) south at Platte River Campground. For reservations or local information call (231) 326-4700 (or (877) 444-6777 for general information); the campground's physical address is 8000 W. Harbor Hwy, Glen Arbor, MI 49636.
