Rollways Campground sits on a high bluff overlooking Loud Dam Pond on the AuSable River, about 7 miles north of Hale, Michigan along M-65 and just off the River Road National Scenic Byway. Built in 1909 as one of the first campgrounds in the former Huron National Forest, this small, secluded site retains a historic, low-key character: an observation area and picnic grounds with a log shelter invite lingering afternoons, and a short, accessible trail links the campground and picnic area to the Westgate Scenic Overlook for a broad view of the AuSable River Valley. TOTAL CAMPSITES: 19 the campground offers 19 pull-through campsites (SITE TYPE BREAKDOWN: 19 Both RV Sites & Tent Sites) equipped with picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts, grills and campfire rings. Vault toilets and drinking water spigots are dispersed through the loop, and all roads and camping spurs are paved, which makes approach and parking straightforward for recreational vehicles. The setting makes Rollways a practical base for river-oriented recreation: the hiking path passes a stairway down to the river where visitors can fish and wade, and Loud Dam Pond and the AuSable provide easy access for water activities in the broader Huron-Manistee National Forests. Nearby, the River Road National Scenic Byway runs roughly 22 miles along the AuSable and is ideal for auto touring or bike rides with frequent pullouts for wildlife viewing and photography. Onsite facilities support classic day-use and overnight comforts picnic tables and grills at the picnic area and a sheltered log pavilion while the Forest Service manages fees, reservations and seasonal openings; check current conditions and booking policies with Huron-Manistee National Forest information before you go.
