“Quiet beautiful campground. Our site#11 was large and a great combination of sun and shade. It is obvious that the COE employees have been working in the campground removing dead trees. The water level was high and the beach somewhat non-existent. ”

2453 LAKE ROAD
Open in Google Maps ↗
Whitehall Bay Campground sits on the shores of Fall River Lake in Greenwood County, Kansas, surrounded by rolling prairie and tree-dotted valleys rimmed by limestone-capped ridges. The lake itself follows the Fall River for about 15 miles, and the broader Fall River Game Management Area and an 8,000-acre wildlife area are immediate neighbors, so wildlife watching is a major draw: prairie chickens, waterfowl, wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, quail, doves and rabbits are commonly seen, and the area protects more than 400 species of birds. Hikers and cyclists can extend a campground visit onto nearby trails the 1.5-mile Casner Creek Trail winds through forest and wildflower meadows in spring and summer, while the 1-mile Turkey Run Trail drops into a wooded ravine, crosses a stream and climbs into tallgrass prairie with wide views of the lake. Water-based recreation is easy to reach from the campground: swimming, boating, water skiing and fishing are standard options on Fall River Lake, and Fall River State Park nearby adds canoeing and additional riverside hiking and birding. The campground's footprint is compact but serviceable for both tent campers and RVs: there are 30 campsites in total, and every site is set up to accommodate both RVs and tents. Among those sites are four group sites and twenty family sites that offer electrical hookups; a dump station is also available for RV users. Shared facilities include flush toilets, cold-water drinking stations, showers, a playground, a sandy beach and a boat ramp, making it straightforward to stage a day of fishing or a family swim. Practical details such as fees, reservation windows and seasonal closures vary, and some park roads include a low-water crossing that can be affected by recent rains, so check with the park office before you go; a privately owned lodge and resort facilities are also in the area if you need alternative accommodations.
