Fall River Dam sits on Fall River in Greenwood County, Kansas, where the lake widens to about a mile across at the damsite and follows the river for roughly 15 miles through rolling prairie and tree-dotted valleys capped with limestone ridges. The broader landscape includes large public wildlife management areas the park notes both a roughly 8,000-acre wildlife area for birding and an approximately 10,900-acre Fall River Game Management Area where prairie chickens, waterfowl, wild turkey, white-tailed deer, quail, doves and a variety of smaller mammals are commonly seen. On the water, visitors can boat, water-ski, jet-ski and swim; anglers target white bass, bluegill, crappie, green sunfish and channel catfish, and nearby Fall River State Park offers additional canoeing and river fishing opportunities. Trails and open roads around the lake make wildlife viewing and biking practical options for people who prefer to stay off the water. The Dam Site campground itself provides 33 campsites total, and all 33 are suitable for both RVs and tents; within the development there are 13 rentable sites that include utility hookups two sites with 50-amp electric and water, six sites with 30-amp electric and water, and five sites with water only while the remainder are primitive vehicle/tent-accessible spots. Facilities on site are basic but useful: vault toilets, drinking water and a playground, and the campground straddles the river just below the spillway for easy lakeshore access. You reach the area north of US-400 via Z-50 Road (near mile marker 344), then follow the park entrance; for fees, reservation windows or seasonal closures, check the park's official site or contact the park office before you go.
