Tipsaw Lake Recreation Area sits on the 131-acre lake in the hills of south-central Indiana's Hoosier National Forest, at about 380 feet elevation, and is built around water-based recreation and easy-access trails. The shoreline combines a sand-and-grass swimming beach with playground equipment and a modern, accessible bathhouse that includes washing stations and changing rooms; the beach area itself is fully accessible. Boaters can launch from a year-round ramp (electric motors allowed) and anglers will find panfish plentiful. A 5.9-mile loop trail leaves from the day-use area and circles the lake, passing scenic overlooks and a mix of hardwood and pine stands; that trail is open to hikers and mountain bikers, although mountain bikers age 17 and older must carry a trail permit. The day-use area also provides picnic shelters, horseshoe pits and open lawns for games, and the Forest Service runs occasional educational and interpretive programs nearby. The campground is arranged across five loops and offers a total of 47 sites: 31 that accommodate both RVs and tents, 12 RV-only sites and 4 tent-only sites, including several group sites that can hold up to 65 people. Most sites have picnic tables and campfire rings with grills; some sites include electric and water hookups (a surcharge applies). Roads and many parking surfaces are paved, and accessible flush toilets, showers and drinking water are provided. Fee policies note that a single-site fee includes one vehicle, while a double-site fee includes two; there is a $5.00 per-day charge for a second vehicle on single sites or for any vehicle beyond the included allowance, with maximums of two vehicles per single site and four per double site. Tipsaw is easy to reach from the region roughly five miles south of St. Croix on State Route 37 and only about three miles from Interstate 64 and visitors should check with the Hoosier National Forest office for current campsite availability, reservation procedures and any seasonal details before heading out.
