“site 17 isn't a good one 'cuz of dead tree limbs falling with one hitting our camper. We then moved to a different site.”

“Very nice small campground with a great view of the Mississippi river!”

About

Thomson Causeway offers island-style camping on a section of the upper Mississippi where the river spreads out the western edge of the recreation area looks across the river at a stretch that measures about 3.5 miles from bank to bank. The campground sits in the backwaters and slow-moving eastern arm of the river, a quiet mosaic of channels, shallow flats and reedy shorelines that supports abundant fish and waterfowl; eagle watching is a winter ritual here. Water-based recreation is the draw: anglers chase channel catfish, bluegill, walleye, largemouth bass and northern pike from shore, boat or bank, and a public ramp puts the river within easy reach. The Central Trail section of the Mississippi River Trail runs beside the campground, giving you continuous walking and biking access along the river; beyond the immediate river corridor you can head north to Ayers Sand Prairie State Nature Preserve or Mississippi Palisades State Park, check out the Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center and Fulton's Dutch Windmill, or catch a minor league game in Clinton. The campground is well-equipped for both car campers and RVs while retaining a backwater-island feel. There are 127 campsites in total: 122 accommodate both RVs and tents, and five are tent-only sites. Sites are grouped into several loops (for example, HPOI contains 28 sites and RIVE contains 20), and some loops such as Hickory, Potters South and Potters North have water at each individual campsite. Modern conveniences include drinking water, accessible flush toilets, a shower house, electrical hookups at most sites, two reservable picnic shelters and a boat ramp; interpretive programs and a visitor center are available through the broader Mississippi River Pools 11 22 recreation area. Reservations and fee information are managed locally call (563) 362-8839 for on-site details or (815) 259-3628 for general information and the site is reached from Thomson, Illinois, just off Illinois Route 84 on the west side of town.
