“The facilities were okay. Lack of water wasn't a big issue - we had to haul it from the ranger station, about 1 mile distant, instead of from a hydrant hundred of feet away. In either case this was a short distance drive. ”

O'Hara Campground sits along the Selway River under a canopy of old cedar and riparian vegetation, offering a straightforward, well-served base for exploring the Selway corridor. This is the largest campground on the Selway with 31 sites, and every site is configured to handle both tents and RVs each site includes a paved parking spur, picnic table and campfire ring. Many sites are accessible, and the campground provides vault toilets, drinking water and bear-resistant dumpsters. The road in is Selway River Road (Forest Road 223), about 7 miles from U.S. Highway 12 at Lowell, Idaho; the paved spurs and clear signage make access predictable, but check with the Forest Service about current road conditions before traveling. Recreation at O'Hara is heavily river- and trail-focused: the Selway River is a destination for fly anglers targeting native cutthroat and rainbows and also sees whitewater rafting, while several trailheads reached from Selway River Road lead into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness for hiking and mountain biking. Beyond fishing and rafting you can expect the broader Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests to offer auto touring, boating, horseback riding and wildlife viewing, and the area includes opportunities for picnicking and swimming in suitable spots nearby. An 11-mile sightseeing drive from Lowell to Selway Falls provides easy access to river overlooks, and the nearby Fenn Ranger Station (listed on the National Register of Historic Places) is a good stop for maps and local guidance. For up-to-date information on fees, reservations, seasonal openings or any use restrictions, contact the local ranger district before you go.
