Johnson Bar Group Site sits in a wide, open field directly alongside the Selway River, about 4.5 miles east of Lowell on Forest Road 223 (Selway River Road). The campground is configured as a single group site TOTAL CAMPSITES: 1 that accommodates both RVs and tents and can hold up to 100 people. The area is relatively exposed compared with forested camps, giving plenty of space for large gatherings, vehicles and tents; individual campsites are located on either side of the group area and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The site is described as accessible and is equipped with concrete conveniences for groups: a main campfire circle plus two smaller fire rings, picnic tables, potable drinking water, and vault toilets adjacent to the site. Note that groups of 25 or more are required to rent 1 3 portable toilets, so plan accordingly. Recreational opportunities are immediate and varied because Johnson Bar sits in the Selway Wild and Scenic River Corridor within the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. The Selway River offers destination fly-fishing for cutthroat and rainbow trout, beach access and boating, and the river is also known for whitewater rafting; several trailheads reachable from Selway River Road lead into the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness for hiking and mountain biking. The drive between Lowell and Selway Falls (about 11 miles of sightseeing) is a convenient side trip, and the historic Fenn Ranger Station is nearby. For information on fees, reservations, seasonal availability and current road conditions, contact the local ranger station or the forest service website before you arrive.
